Will CBD Help Me Sleep???

Are you having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? The implications for using CBD to promote wellness through increased duration and sleep quality are potentially very significant.

According to an article published by the National Academy of Sciences titled Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation: An Unmet Public Health Problem, it is estimated that 50 to 70 million Americans chronically suffer from a disorder of sleep and wakefulness.

A CDC report titled Perceived Insufficient Rest or Sleep Among Adults states that 70% of American adults report that they obtain insufficient sleep at least one night a month, and 11% report inadequate sleep every night. Most Americans underestimate the effects of sleep deprivation on physical and mental health, inhibiting cognitive function, energy levels, and higher risks of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, and stroke.

Prescription Sleep Aides VS. CBD

Many prescription drugs can help chronic sleep illness and are useful for many people, but it is also important to note that many of these treatments have dramatic side effects and can be addictive. That is where CBD is different and why it has become so popular among adults seeking sleep relief.

The Science Behind CBD and Sleep

While the data supporting the use of CBD to improve sleep is limited, its application is supported in part by the low addiction potential and non-intoxicating properties. The available data suggests that there is a differential response to CBD as it relates to sleep. (Babson, Sottile et al. 2017)

Low doses of CBD (5-15mgs) have been found to be stimulating and reduce stage 3 sleep and result in next-day sleepiness. (Nicholson, Turner et al. 2004) This study also showed that CBD counteracted the sedative effects of THC at these low doses.

Higher doses (160-600mg) of CBD have been shown to be sedative. (Zuardi 2008) In human trials completed in the 1970s-80s patients with insomnia taking a 160mg dose of CBD significantly increased sleep duration relative to a placebo. (Carlini and Cunha 1981) This same report also evaluated CBD at acute doses as high as 600mgs and chronic doses of 3mg/kg/day (300mg/100kg patient) revealed no detectable measures of toxicity based on EKG, blood pressure, and blood and urine analysis.

This is potentially significant since as many as 1/3 of the US population does not get enough sleep each night based on the CDC guidance for sleep and sleep disorders. The CDC also emphasizes that not enough sleep is a contributing factor to the development of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and depression.
